The Hopewell/Prince George United Way had its annual dinner on Thursday, congratulating themselves on exceeding their highest goal ever in 2007.
In last year's fundraiser, the members met their goal of $450,000 and exceeded it, gaining a total of $452,031, which will be donated to local charities and human service organizations.
"I think it's a tremendous reflection of the kind of people we have in the Hopewell community," said president Rick Higbie.
The event was held in the Beacon Theatre, which Higbie said was an apt setting for the dinner.
"It's a great venue because it represents the revitalization of downtown," said Higbie.
Many people were given plaques for their generous contri-butions to the United Way fund.
"Despite all the obstacles, the industries and the community were all able to exceed the most challenging goal the chapter has ever had," said Higbie. "We will continue to grow, and we will get more as we continue through 2008."
The highest contributors were Hercules Inc. and Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, which donated over $10,000 each in funds. Dominion Resources, Dupont Teijin Films and Vulcan Materials Company also were major donors, with each offering between $5,000 and $10,000.
