Bad to worse?
That's the question HHS baseball coach Ricky Irby keeps asking himself.
Already shorthanded, he lost mound mainstay for the season Ryan Bradshaw with a thumb injury; Richard Spoon missed last week's games with an eye ailment.
More problems: his Devils couldn't field the ball, making errors of omission and commission in a 10-2 loss of Colonial Heights on thursday.
For instance — a strike out ended with the runner on base; a dropped popup in foul territory gave the batter another chance. He walked.
A ball to the outfield was played late and erronously, letting a runner score from first.
Hitting also failed.
Hopewell got a run in the first for its only lead. Colonial Heights struck for four runs in its first bat and three more in the second erased any doubt. The hometanding Colonials got three more in the fifth.
Hopewell got its other run in the third.
One bright spot was Brett Ellis's 3-for-3 bat game with two RBIs. Adam Wagner had a hit and run; Chris Pisarek and Kyle Snyder got a hit each for Hopewell.
The loss dropped Hopewell to 3-5 in league; 3-10 on the year. CH is 5-5, 9-7.
J.D. McCarty was 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBIs; Casey Barnes had five strikeouts in notching the win along with a 2-for-2 bat game and two RBIs; Josh Markins 1-for-3, double, 2 RBI.
