| Eagles No. 20 Ryan Bradshaw takes a swing at the pitch during their last game against Post 137. |
Post 146's Eagles got their game together a nine-inning game and claimed a 10-3 victory over Powhatan Post 201 Thursday for their first win of the District 11 American Legion season.
The Hopewell/Prince George team made up of mostly high school players is 1-2 after the win. The two prior losses found the Eagles either leading or in strong status through seven innings, but they faltered there and lost.
Not this time, though.
One reason was Ryan Bradshaw. He's been on the injured list much of the spring season. Thursday he was in charge and pitched the Eagles to victory. He gave up one earned run and four hits in those seven innings. He struck out six.
But that's not all. He hit a single into right-center in the first inning to bring home two runs and Post 146 led all the way.
They added single runs in the second and third and fifth and sixth before closing it out with four in the seventh.
Hitting the Eagles banged out 134 hits in the victory, their best of the year.
Fielding except for a bobble in the first that gave homestanding 201 its initial marker, the defense did the job.
One particularly good play came in the eighth with a run in and two more in scoring position. A ball dropped in the outfield and the home team thought it could do some real damage.
Wrong fielder. South Carolina-bound Jackie Bradley whipped the ball to third base, where the fielder had plenty of time to confront the advancing run.
A strikeout got the third out, and that was it.
But, back to the scoring. Bradley got on by a bobble in the first, David Sebera singled, and Adam Capps moved both up with a well-placed bunt. Then Bradshaw sent them home with his hit.
In the seventh, Capps doubled to left; Kyle Brooks singled in the first run, then Adam Wagner singled. Eric Tucker chased both home with a triple down the right field line; and Brett Attkisson's squeeze bunt got the fourth run.
Sebera, Capps, Bradshaw, Brooks, Wagner and Tucker had two hits each; Bradshaw and Attkisson on each.
