Evonik Goldschmidt had a special ceremony Friday honoring their work crew for going three years without a major accident.
“Maintaining a safe workplace and making the well-being of our employees a top priority helps ensure we protect our company’s greatest asset, our highly motivated, committed and talented workforce,” said Evonik president Dr. Reinhold Brand.
Specifically, the chemical facility is being congratulated for going three years without a lost-time accident, meaning accidents which cause employees to have to miss work.
"It's something really worth celebrating," said Brand. "Three years without accidents means every day, you come in here safely and you go out safely."
Brand also congratulated the staff for successfully dealing with a recent incident with an over-pressurized rail car than necessitated an evacuation of the building. The incident was resolved by the end of the day, with all employees returning to work as normal the next morning.
Also present at the ceremony was Alton Jamison, a motivational speaker and 1996 Hopewell High graduate.
"Safe people build successful companies," said Jamison. "We don't want to just look like we're doing the right thing, we want to do the right thing, day in and day out."
The German-based company's Hopewell plant makes chemical products used in a variety of household items.
