While the beautiful days of summer are just around the corner, increased heat and humidity will mean more bad air days for Hopewell residents. Fortunately, community members involved with the Hopewell Clean Air Network (CAN) have developed a plan to use simple tools that empower residents to report air quality concerns and ultimately reduce the frequency of bad air days. On Sunday, June 7, Hopewell CAN volunteers will deliver these tools to their neighbors living in Downtown Hopewell.
Established nearly a year ago, the Hopewell Clean Air Network is a grassroots organization that seeks to foster open discussion between citizens, local government, and local industries to create healthier and safer communities through reductions in air pollution and general improvements to the natural environment. Since their inception, activists with Hopewell CAN have learned that reporting the frequency of bad air days is the simplest action citizens can take to improve air quality. On that note, distributing easy-to-use magnets that encourage citizens to report air quality concerns will be the main objective of Sunday’s efforts.
The Hopewell Clean Air Network hopes that a community-based, one-on-one approach will help their neighbors understand that they do not have to sacrifice their right to clean air because they live in an industrial town. Hopewell can see a reduction, or even the elimination of, objectionable odors and toxic chemicals, but improvements are not going to come to fruition until neighbors are engaged, empowered, and informed – a goal that is being wholeheartedly pursued this Sunday, June 7.
