PHOTO BY CHAI GALLAHUN. Mitchell McBee was found in his home’s yard suffering from a critical injury that he later died from at Virginia Commonweath University Medical Center. Police are still investigating the case.

The Hopewell Police Department is investigating its first homicide of the year. At about 2:55 a.m. June 3, officers responded to a 911 call at 107 S. 16th Ave.
Officers on the scene discovered the victim, Mitchell McBee, 27, suffering from a critical injury. He was transported to the John Randolph Medical Center before being transported by MedFlight to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center for treatment.
McBee died from his injuries at 5:12 a.m. The exact cause of death was yet to be determined by the medical examiner's office at press time.
Unverified reports from neighbors indicated that McBee had gone outside to investigate a noise near where his car was parked and was shot in the abdomen.
The incident is under the purview of the Hopewell Police Department Investigative Services Division. Anyone with information on this or other crimes in Hopewell may call Investigative Services at 541-2284 or Crime Solvers at 541-2202.
In 2008, there were three deaths that were ruled as murder and non-negligent manslaughter in the city. In 2007, that number was two.
