Twelve people are facing 21 indictments after a sweep of alleged street-level drug dealers in Hopewell.
"Operation Summer Wind" was implemented by the Hopewell Police Department Crime Suppression Unit in collaboration with the Central Virginia Narcotics Task Force. The subjects were apprehended June 11.
Additionally, two search warrants were served that resulted in the seizure of illegal narcotics. The indictment charges are as follows:
• Two counts of possession of cocaine;
• Maintaining a common nuisance;
• Eleven counts of distribution of cocaine; and
• Seven counts of distribution of a narcotic within 1,000 feet of a school zone
Through the search warrants, the following additional charges were obtained:
• Possession of cocaine and
• Possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics.
As of Monday, 16 indictments have been served on 11 of the subjects. The Hopewell Police Department is not yet releasing photographs or the names of the arrestees at this time said Lt. Joe Sumner.
The Hopewell Sheriff's Office provided support in this endeavor as well with temporary housing and transportation of those who were arrested.
"This cooperative effort demonstrates the importance the Hopewell Police Department places on providing a safe community for its citizens," said Chief Steven Martin in a press release. "By aggressively pursuing illegal drug dealers, we are cleaning up the city of illegal narcotics and raising the quality of life for all."
