A Maryland girl was killed and four others were injured along Interstate 95 in Prince George County early Monday morning. At 4:39 a.m., Trooper A.A. Ragsdale was called to the scene on I-95 at Exit 45 for South Crater Road.
A 2000 Lincoln Navigator was traveling southbound on I-95 when it ran off the right side of the road. The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The SUV struck the guardrail and overturned at least four times as it crossed back over the southbound lanes. The vehicle then came to rest on its passenger side in the median.
A 12-year-old passenger in the Navigator was thrown from the vehicle and into the northbound lane of I-95, where she was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer. The girl died at the scene. She had been riding in the rear cargo area of the SUV and was not buckled up.
The driver of the vehicle, Diane P. Nixon of Boyds, Md., was flown by State Police Med-Flight helicopter to the Virginia Commonweath University Medical Center. Her injuries are considered life-threatening. She was wearing a seat belt.
Dixon is the mother of the 12-year-old girl and of Hassan Dixon, 16, a passenger in the vehicle. Hassan was transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center. He was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was wearing a seat belt and his injures are not considered life-threatening.
A Dixon family member, Jordan Lusane, 18, and family friend, Taylor Scott, 12, were each wearing seat belts. They were both transported by ambulance to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.
Charges are pending at this time as the cause of the crash is still under investigation. The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting Trooper Ragsdale with the crash investigation.
