United Way of Hopewell-Prince George kicked off its 2009 Campaign at a luncheon at Jordan Point Golf Club Sept. 17.
President James Speidel welcomed the volunteers, agency representatives, board members and community leaders.
Chairmen Mark Haley and Lewis Stevenson both thanked the volunteers for giving their time to help others. They said that some of the 26 local agencies supported by the campaign can be compared to preventative medicine. Programs of the Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters give guidance and support, a safe place to do homework and socialize after school activities, and professional mentoring programs. These agencies — along with Fort Lee Youth Services, Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts — all have a positive influence on our youth. The Salvation Army helps to provide food, rent and utility assistance, emergency and transitional housing during times of crisis and relief assistance during disasters. This agency along with the Food Pantry have become very important in the recent economic times.
The group’s goal is set at $350,000 this year and the agency feels that with these volunteers and the support of the community, industrial employees and companies that goal will be met.
