On Sunday, Sept. 27 caravan tours will depart from Poplar Grove National Cemetery located at stop #11 of the Petersburg National Battlefield driving tour. The departure times are 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Battle of Peebles’ Farm is one of the lesser known battles of the siege of Petersburg; however, the level of tragedy was high, with a combined casualty number of over 4,000 men.
The objective of the Union attack was to conquer the last of the Confederate supply lines coming into Petersburg; the Boydton Plank Road and the South Side Railroad. By taking part in this tour visitors will understand why the attack failed and learn about some of the most significant soldiers involved in the battle.
