VSU Men Tabbed to Finish Fourth in North

The Virginia State University men’s basketball team is predicted to finish fourth overall in the CIAA Northern Division this year, the conference announced.

The Trojans compiled an 8-19 record last season.

Senior forward Kenny Mitchell was named to the All CIAA Preseason Team. Mitchell led the Trojans in scoring with 16.4 points per game and in rebounds with 6.5 boards per game as a junior. He also posted a team-high 19 blocks last season. 

Mitchell surpassed 10 rebounds in four games last year and grabbed a season-high 12 boards against Livingstone at home.

VSU coach Darryl Jacobs will return 70 percent of his offense from last season, which was his first with the team from Ettrick.

Last year, VSU ranked second in the conference in defensive field goal percentage by limiting opponents to an average of 41 percent from the field.

Jacobs and the Trojans will open their 2012-13 campaign with seven straight home games.

The Virginia State University women’s basketball team is predicted to finish second overall this year in the CIAA Northern Division, the league announced on Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans finished with a 17-13 record last season. Senior guard Brianna Holt and junior forward LaMesha Deal were selected to the All CIAA Preseason Team.

Deal is the team’s top returning scorer and rebounder, averaging 8.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore. 

Holt averaged 5.3 points per game last season and also led the Lady Trojans by shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc.

The Lady Trojans had a standout year on defense, leading the conference in rebounding and ranking third in shooting percentage allowed from the field (39.2).
