Virginia State Police is continuing its investigation into a crash involving a state trooper that occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

Trooper C. A Putnam had stopped his unmarked 2012 Chevrolet Caprice police cruiser on the right shoulder to change his right rear tire, which was flat.  The police vehicle’s emergency lights were activated at the time.

As Putnam was attempting to change the tire, a 2007  Bounder RV and a 2004 Nissan pickup truck collided behind him.  The impact caused the driver of the pickup to lose control of her vehicle and run off the right side of the roadway.  The Nissan struck an embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn and head towards Putnam, who was outside of his vehicle. Putnam dove out of the way of the Nissan as it struck the police cruiser.

Trooper Putnam was not struck, but did suffer minor injuries as he dove out of the way of the vehicle.  He was later transported by ambulance to Chippenham Medical Center.

The driver of the Nissan, who was wearing her safety belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center.

The driver and a passenger in the RV were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
