Soldier from Chester killed in Afghanistan

A decorated soldier from Chester was killed in Afghanistan Jan. 10.

Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, died from injuries sustained when his unit was attacked by small arms fire while on mounted patrol in the Khogyani District of Nangarhar Province. His death is the first U.S. military casualty in Afghanistan in 2013.

He was serving his second deployment in Afghanistan and was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart Medal.

Wittman was a graduate of The Citadel.

Wittman joined the Army in 2008. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga., where he arrived in 2012.
