HOPEWELL -- Despite temperatures in the 40s and a rainy start, runners came out to support Hopewell schools Saturday morning for the Leprechaun Dash 5K.

The race, which circled around City Point, drew about 180 participants, according to the teachers who organized the event, Jen Layne and Tyler Faria from Patrick Copeland Elementary School and Annamae Meyer from Hopewell High School. Runners could pick which school they wanted their contribution to go to.

The winner of the race was 19-year-old Kyle Fletcher, who is an Advanced Individual Training student stationed at Fort Lee. Many others from Fort Lee attended the event.

Fletcher said the weather didn’t bother him because he was used to running through track and cross country in high school and then the military.

Rounding out the top five in the race was Jackson Greene, McKenzie Myers, Keon Flowers and Wirt Marks.

Runners got T-shirts and there were races for kids and a costume contest. Many were dressed in green and sporting shamrocks.
