PRINCE GEORGE — A 22-year-old mother has been arrested in connection with the death of a 20-month-old child. Henrico Police Department arrested Brittney Rochelle Downing, of 4600 block Bailey Ridge Lane, Prince George, on Tuesday. Downing is being charged with two counts of felonious child neglect.
Around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Prince George Police responded to her home on a call for a unresponsive child. Upon arriving at the scene, the rescue squad tried to revive the child but efforts were unsuccessful and it was determined that the child had died, according to Captain Eric Young with the Prince George County Police Department.
A 2-month-old, also at the residence, was also found to be ill and Young said the child was taken to Virginia Commonwealth Medical Center in Richmond and currently remains in critical condition.
Young said the residence was tested for carbon monoxide. He said this was just as a precaution and to determine if it can ruled out as a possible cause of death. Young said the meters used for testing came back with negative readings on both the apartment and the adjacent apartments in the Bailey’s Ridge Apartments, which are between Hopewell and Fort Lee not far off Oaklawn Boulevard.
Henrico County Police Department was contacted by the Prince George County Police Department to aid in the investigation. Prince George County Police and Henrico Country Police detectives have determined that two criminal offenses occurred in Henrico County, though no further details have been provided at this time and the investigation is currently ongoing.
