Two people are dead following separate crashes in our area over the long holiday weekend. One left a 7-year-old boy dead in Prince George and another killed a woman near Chester.
At around 9:11 p.m. Friday, Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 North at the 39 mile marker in Prince George County.
Police say the crash occurred when the driver of a 2009 Nissan Maxima traveling north ran off the left side of the roadway. Police say the driver overcorrected causing the vehicle to run off the right side of the road, striking several trees.
The driver suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was flown to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. A 3-year-old girl, who was seated in the back seat behind the driver, suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center. Tyli D Ajuan Higgs, 7, of Accokeek, Md., who was seated in the back seat behind the passenger seat, died at the scene. It remains under investigation if any of the occupants were wearing a safety belt or in a proper child safety restraint device.
All lanes of 95 northbound were closed for approximately 30 minutes before the left lane was re-opened to traffic. All lanes were re-opened at approximately 3:00 a.m. Saturday.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the on-going investigation. State Police is consulting with the Prince George County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. Charges are pending against the driver, Jeffery Higgs, 28, of the 1000 block Trunnel Lane, Accokeek, Md., who is the father of the two children who were injured.
Meanwhile, the Chesterfield County Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed one driver. The crash occurred in the 10700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, just north of Chester, at about 10:20 a.m. Sunday.
Police said a 2000 Kia Sportage was traveling north on Jefferson Davis Highway when the driver lost control and crossed into the southbound travel lane and struck a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup going south.
The driver of the Kia Sportage, identified as Rachel Lynn Lizardi-Cabollero, 32, died at the scene. The driver and two passengers in the Dodge Ram pickup were transported to Chippenham Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police continue their investigation into this crash.
