Richard Bland College Athletics finishes first in the Virginia Sports All-Sports Survey

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College Athletics finished first in the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Two-Year College All-Sports Survey for 2016-17. The Statesmen completed the year with an overall record of 67-34-2 for an overall winning percentage of .660 percent to earn the first-place ranking among the seven schools surveyed -- finishing ahead of runners-up Patrick Henry Community College (97-84-1, .536). Richard Bland ranked first among both men’s sports (42-13-2, .754) and women’s sports (25-21, .543). This is the first year that VaSID has ranked the two-year schools in the Commonwealth.
“Finishing first among all of the two-year colleges in Virginia is a testament to the outstanding job and hard work of our coaches and student-athletes,” said Richard Bland Director of Athletics Chuck Moore. “We strive for ‘Nothing Less Than Excellence’ in our program and this shows that we are achieving it on the fields and courts. I want to thank the VaSID organization for recognizing the two-year schools for the first time this year.”
Richard Bland men’s basketball proved most successful during the past year, finishing with an overall record of 30-6, including the NJCAA District 15, Region 10 Tournament Championship after completing the Region 10 regular season as runners-up with a record of 17-2. The Statesmen posted the second-most wins in program history and concluded their second NJCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in three years with a fourth-place finish among 123 NJCAA DII men’s basketball programs.
Richard Bland men’s soccer completed is finest season in the four-year history of the program with an overall record of 12-7-2, establishing a new school-record for wins, while attaining its second consecutive 10-win season. The Statesmen advanced to the 2016 NJCAA Southeast District Championship for the first time after claiming its first-ever Region 10 Men’s Soccer Tournament Championship, finishing the campaign with a record of 8-3-2 over their last 13 matches with five shutouts.
Richard Bland softball finished the 2017 season with a final overall record of 25-21, the second-most wins in program history. The Statesmen were the Region 10 Softball Tournament runners-up for the second time in three years, after compiling a 16-8 record during the regular season. Richard Bland established 11 new program records, including team batting average (.374), home runs (29) and RBIs (320).
In addition, Richard Bland women’s golf won the Wake Tech Eagles’ Cup in March among its three top three finishes, while qualifying two individuals (Anna Carole Cole, Kenedi Byard) to the NJCAA Women’s Golf Championship in May. Statesmen men’s golf had two runners-up finishes among their three top 10 finishes, and qualified one individual (Frankie Lin) to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship in May.
Following Richard Bland and Patrick Henry in the survey were Danville Community College (30-32, .484), Bryant & Stratton College (54-62, .466), Northern Virginia Community College (36-86-1, .297), Thomas Nelson Community College (11-28, .282) and New River Community College (8-43, .157).
