COLONIAL HEIGHTS—Coming into Monday night’s game against the Dinwiddie Lady Generals, the Colonials needed to notch a win as the rest of the week featured battles against Meadowbrook, Thomas Dale, and Prince George. But Dinwiddie’s 27-15 second half surge lifted the Generals to a 43-30 victory and set the Colonials up for a long last week of girls’ basketball.
“We have this game tonight, tomorrow we play Thomas Dale, Thursday we travel to Meadowbrook, and they wanted us to play a makeup game against Prince George on Wednesday, but I had them move it to 11 a.m. Saturday,” Colonials Coach Larry Fox said.
The week does not bode well for the Colonials as they face all of the former Central District’s top teams going down the stretch. In the end, they will likely play the top seed in the Conference 25 tournament next week, likely either Poquoson or Warhill.
The Colonials kept the score close through the first half, going to the locker room trailing by one point, 16-15. Dinwiddie’s size and some deft free throw shooting by Kaitlyn Ragsdale, who scored four times in four tries and added two baskets in the quarter, opened up a 13-point lead for the visitors. Ashley Armstrong’s 15 points, eight in the second quarter, paced the Generals and Kaitlyn Ragsdale chunked in 11.
Savannah Musselwhite’s seven points led the Colonials. Hannah Haynes and Janell Moore each scored six points.
Fox said his team was working on lay ups and free throws at Saturday’s practice. As a team, they were shooting a very low percentage from the floor, and 49 percent from the charity stripe. Against Dinwiddie the floor shooting still needs work, but the team hit on 14 of 24 free throws, nearly 10 percent higher than their season average. By comparison, the Generals were 10 of 33 from the stripe for 30 percent.
