CHESTERFIELD — A 35-year-old man is believed to have murdered his family before taking his own life in Matoaca on Sunday night, according to Chesterfield police.
Authorities were called to a residence in the 5700 block of Fox Maple Terrace shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday “to check the welfare of a subject,” police said.
When police arrived on scene, they found Renotta I. Jernigan, 30, and her 2-year-old son, Seth Jernigan, both suffering from gunshot wounds outside of the residence. Inside, Barry C. Jernigan, 35, and Alexis F. Kellas, 9, were also shot.
Renotta, Barry and Kellas, Renotta’s daughter, were pronounced dead at the scene, and Seth was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center before he was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.
Authorities are led to believe that Barry shot and killed his wife, son and step-daughter before killing himself.
Neighbors were attempting to revive both Seth and his mother when police arrived at the residence, according to authorities.
Other news reports have indicated that Barry’s employer had called authorities after receiving a worrisome phone call from Barry.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, and anyone with further information is encouraged to contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at (804)-748-1251.
