CHESTERFIELD — A longtime Hopewell-area business has decided to move to Chester.
Gary and Margy Chandler recently relocated their jewelry shop, The Chandlery, from the Crossings shopping center on Oaklawn Boulevard just outside of Hopewell in Prince George to the River’s Bend shopping center in Chester.
On their final day open at their old location, Gary said the move is bittersweet “because we’ve had so many friends here that we’ve met and serviced over the years.”
“Hopewell has been very good to us,” Margy said.
They hope to draw new customers, but they also hope they are close enough to Hopewell to keep their old customers too.
“Sometimes you just got to choose a new route,” Margy said.
They were already looking to move when Food Depot filed for bankruptcy June 2 and closed soon thereafter. The Chandlers said the timing of their move couldn’t be better with the loss of the biggest store of the Crossings.
She said new customers tell her all the time how they happened to be going by and see their business.
“There’s no anchor store here anymore. I need an anchor,” Margy said.
The Chandlers, who live in Hopewell, had been at the Crossings shopping center for three years but they’ve been in business for 20 years.
Gary got into jewelry as a hobby, making items for Margy and doing items for family and friends. They took a chance and opened their first store at 215 E. Broadway.
They’ve also had the full-service jewelry shop on City Point Road before the location in the Crossings. They do on-the-spot repairs, resizing and engraving as well as special orders and custom work. Gary handles the metal work and repairs while Margy handles the sales.

Gary said he hopes the new location in Chester will help the store grow.
“We’ve kind of maxed out here,” he said.
But Margy said the new location really is more centrally located to their clients because a lot of their customers come from Chesterfield as well as the Hopewell area.
They also will begin offering classes at the new location.
The Last day at their old store was June 26 and they held a grand opening July 7 at the new location. Margy said moving was a lot more effort than it looks. “Everything is just so tiny,” she said.
The store got off to a good start at the new spot. The first day open, the shop stayed busy with the Chandlers only getting a break around 3:30 p.m.
The new store is located at 13117 River’s Bend Blvd., near Food Lion. They can be reached at 804-458-7751.
