Recently retired Colonial Heights teacher dies

COLONIAL HEIGHTS -- Students and staff of Colonial Heights High School are mourning the loss of a teacher after she died recently.

Deborah Howser Burgess, 60, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, at St. Mary’s Hospital, according to her obituary.

Burgess was a physical education teacher and had retired at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

She had been a teacher since 1976, having also taught in Hampton, Poquoson, Albemarle and Dinwiddie.

Former students posted many positive comments online.

"Play some badminton up in heaven for me. CHHS will miss you. Thanks for always being so supportive," one post on Twitter reads.

Burgess was known for her upbeat personality, and students said she left a lasting impression on them.

She had been battling illness for the past year.
