CHESTERFIELD — Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred near the Virginia State University campus on Friday morning.
Around 3:15 a.m., police responded to the area of East River Road and Williams Street for a report of a subject who had been shot. When they arrived on scene, they found an 18-year-old male victim who had been shot in the leg. The victim, who was not a VSU student, was taken to the Southside Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Following the incident on Friday morning, VSU asked students to remain in their residence halls and restricted access to campus. After determining there was no threat, normal campus activities resumed around 7 a.m.
At this point, investigators have indicated the shooting may have been part of an altercation that started at a residence in the 20400 block of Williams Street, and that the parties involved in the shooting knew each other. The investigation is still ongoing.
