COLONIAL HEIGHTS -- The Kmart store in Colonial Heights will soon be closing its doors, laying off as many as 113 employees.
A corporate representative said the Kmart store located at 116 Southgate Square will close to the public in mid-May. The store will begin its liquidation on March 1.
“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings, wrote in an email.
He said the hope is that it will benefit remaining Kmart stores.
“As a result, we hope to retain a portion of the sales previously associated with these stores by nurturing and maintaining our relationships with the members that shopped these locations,” Riefs wrote.
Other Kmart stores are located in Chester and near Richmond. A Sears store, which is operated by the same company, is located at Southpark Mall, very close to the Kmart location in Colonial Heights. Riefs said no other stores are closing at this time.
Riefs said most of the 113 Kmart employees are part time/hourly and those who are eligible will get severance and will be able to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.
A sign on the store’s doors says that due to “unforeseen circumstances” the store will no longer be offering some services such as layaway, check cashing or money orders.
Riefs said customers with layaway purchases can either pay off the contract early or transfer their layaway contract to another store or online.
