National Night Out is a community event that brings neighbors together with good food and fellowship.
PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been hot, humid and even rained, but never have any weather conditions deterred the enthusiasm of crowds adding up into the thousands in Prince George County as they come out to celebrate National Night Out.
On August 1, that excitement is returning here, and the Prince George County Police Department announced that 33 NNO events will take place across the county.
Once again, the Carson Volunteer Fire Department will be the site of activities for the community, as Fire Chief Scott Campbell says he expects around 75 to 100 to attend. Children will get to enjoy a bouncy house and other fun activities including cooling off with some tasty and colorful Sno Cones provided by the department. However, because of the heat, the majority of the rest of the party fun will be inside the station.
“The new station allows up to have more activities inside,” Campbell noted. He urges participation from all the county residents who can go to one of the many sites from the Appomattox Boat Harbor on Fine Street to the Burrowsville Community Center.
“It’s all about community, and that’s what we are about,” the chief said of NNO and the Carson fire department. “It brings us all together for fellowship, gets kids together and lets the community we are involved.
“It shows the community that neighbors are looking out for each other and is a chance for those who moved here recently, to get to meet others.”
Campbell also said that events like NNO help people get to know each other and they can report any strange activities to law enforcement.
He praised Prince George Community Policing for their efforts that have resulted in the county being at the top in participation numbers across the region as neighborhoods throughout the country take part in National Night Out.
“The Police Department does a great job, and so does everyone who supports it including fire departments, county employees and the Sheriff’s Office and others,” he commended.
While Carson VFD adds to the menu of hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and popcorn, the county supplies food for all of the parties.
“National Night Out 2017 will be the 15th Annual National Night Out celebration in Prince George County. In 2016, Prince George held 32 NNO block parties involving approximately 2,600 participants. In 2017, there will be 33 NNO block parties in neighborhoods and communities throughout the County,” Prince George Police stated. “National Night Out is designed to: Heighten crime prevention awareness; Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”
Campbell says he hopes this year’s events “will be as successful as in the past years, and I think it will.”
