Obituaries - January 27, 2017

Margaret Marie Chavis Podlewski left her earthly body on Jan. 20, 2017. She was born in Petersburg, Va., the oldest of seven children, on Mar. 15, 1924 to Myrtle Lee Braswell and Thomas Baker Chavis. Preceded in death by her husband Albert Francis Podlewski, children Diane Podlewski and Stephen Podlewski, siblings Louise Chavis, Pauline C. Bevel, Roger Chavis and Thomas “Bubba” Chavis. Surviving children Patricia, Edward, Katherine Podlewski and Theresa P. Linton. Surviving siblings Elizabeth C. Boyette and David L. Chavis. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Hopewell, Va..
 Marie worked at Fort Lee during WWII, at Patrick Copeland School and First Baptist Church in Hopewell as a secretary and librarian. She volunteered at Hopewell Social Services and Food Pantry for many years. She was an avid genealogist in her later years. She is irreplaceable; she will be missed but always Loved!

William Lewis Besley, entered into eternal rest at the age of 72, on January 20, 2017 at 11:45 am. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sheila D Shorwak Besley. He leaves behind his brother, Jack F. Besley, his loving son William F Besley, his caring love Denise Harris, and many close friends. 
Born April 4th 1944, a caring man with a strong heart. He joined the Navy and became a Qualified Submariner in 1965, joining the Ranks of Men on the U.S.S. Torsk and Proudly served for many years. 
After Retiring he moved into his favorite line of work, Auto Mechanics. He opened Multiple Businesses in the Hopewell Area. Quickly becoming a popular man. Mr. Bill was a beloved man who lived a good life, sharing his wisdom and charisma with all who knew him. Because of his just heart, we, Family and Friends, know he will be received into our Lords Kingdom with open arms. 

N. Frances Boardway, 84, of Ocala, FL passed away on January 19, 2017 at her home.  Her death was caused by complications stemming from Parkinson’s Disease.  Christened Nettie Frances, she was the daughter of Bertha Frances Gurkin Power and Thornton Gurkin of Hopewell, VA, where she was raised by her mother and step-father, Woodson B. Power.  In her youth, she was affectionately known as “Pudge”.  After marrying her husband, John, they made their home in Bel Air, MD for 52 years before moving to Ocala in 2005.  Frances worked as a telephone operator and a dental assistant/office manager; however, her first love was nursing.  After achieving her LPN license, she worked at Hartford Memorial Hospital and John Hopkins.  Later she helped to open Fallston General Hospital, where she stayed until it closed and moved to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.  Fran remained on staff part-time with the Health Link group until she retired in 2005 after 31 years of service.  In addition to her involvement with nursing care, she was an avid reader, loved to make a wide variety of crafts and her cakes and fudge acquired a significant following in the medical community.  She loved to shop for bargains and was a serious collector of figurines, including Precious Moments, doctors and nurses, and bald headed Santa Clauses.  Her favorite recreations were dancing and being a ‘beach bum.’  Fran is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, John C Boardway of Ocala, FL; her son, Gordon Randolph Boardway of Orlando, FL; daughter-in-law, Gail Boardway of Orlando, FL; two grandchildren, Georgia Lynne Boardway and Preston Scott Boardway; two great granddaughters all of Orlando, FL.  Fran is also survived by two sisters, Linda Lovelady and Nancye Martin both of Hopewell, VA.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Shirley Cotman of Hopewell, VA.  Private family services will be held at a later date.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers make donations in her name to Michael J. Shirley Jones Taylor, 81, of Hopewell, VA passed away on Monday, January 23, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel T. Jones Sr. and Eleanor Turner Jones; her loving husband of 63 years, Gilbert Lee Taylor Sr.; a grandson, Michael A. Pulley; sisters, Lois J. Walker, Mildred Shaw; brothers, Daniel T. Jones, Jr., and George A. Jones. She is survived by her children, Gilbert L. Taylor, Jr. (Barbara), Debra T. Fratarcangelo (Mike), Hubert E. Taylor (Mary), Michell T. Pulley (Allen); grandchildren, Joey Fratarcangelo, Emily Ferguson (Robert), Andrew Taylor, and Meghan Pulley; great- granddaughter, Elena R. Johnston; brother, Gordon L. Jones; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. Shirley retired from John Randolph Medical Center after many years of service; she then remained at John Randolph Medical Center as a volunteer for several years. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W. Broadway Ave. Hopewell, VA 23860.
