What a week!
Prince George's girls softball team wrapped up a 5-game, three-day run Friday with a 9-2 win over Hopewell, giving them a 5-0 record over that span.
A 5-run third inning figured big in the decision.
PG was 9-1 going into a new week with three tilts on tap. Midlothian visited Monday in a non-league go. Matoaca and Dinwiddie are Central District foes today and Thursday, respectively.
The win also pushed PG to 12-2 on the year; Hopewell is 2-6 and 3-8.
After PG went up 5-0 they added a single tally in the sixth and three more in the last frame. Hopewell got both of its runs in the sixth.
Caitlen Manning singled behind two walks to load the bases in the third. Winning pitcher Lauren Vinson hit for a 2-0 lead. Jami Davis sent two home with a hit.
Manning got the sixth-inning run with a single and then legging it all the way around the bases on outfield mistakes.
She singled in two of those tallies in the seventh; Maggie Roberts hit for the other.
Lyndsey Davis and Angelique Hios got Hopewell hits in the sixth and later crossed home.
Vinson went the distance on the mound, allowing just three hits for her fourth win in the 3-day span.
Thursday
The Lady Royals got two more strong pitching performances and timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader from Meadowbrook Thursday. Scores were 9-1 and 7-0.
That raised their Central District record to 9-1; season mark to 11-2.
Lauren Vinson followed two no-hitters of the day before with a one-hit job; she struck out 11.
Caitlen Manning had a 3-for-3 bat game with a triple, four runs and two RBIs; Vinson had a two-run triple and two RBIs to go with her strong mound job.
In the second game, Maggie Roberts checked MB on just one hit for the mound win. She struck out six.
Krissy Fried had a triple and run; Adain O'Hare a hit and RBI; and Roberts a hit and RBI for bat leaders in that one.
"They did what they needed to do," coach Pat Waguespack said. His Lady Royals did not commit a fielding error in 10 innings of play.
